Fruits & Nuts Tree Farming
Regenerative Orchards & Biodiversity Systems at Velan Farm
At Velan Farm, our Fruits & Nuts Tree Farming program is part of a broader regenerative circular farming and biodiversity strategy. Our orchards are not managed as isolated crop blocks, they are designed as multi-layered, living ecosystems that support soil life, pollinators, beneficial insects, birds, and surrounding plant communities.
Located in the heart of California’s East Bay, our orchards take advantage of Morgan Hill’s diverse microclimates, fertile soils, and Mediterranean weather to cultivate a unique selection of premium-quality Asian, tropical, and heritage fruit trees, while actively restoring ecological balance.
Orchards as Living Ecosystems
Every fruit and nut tree at Velan Farm contributes to a functional biodiversity network:
- Tree canopies regulate temperature and moisture
- Understory plants protect soil and support microbes
- Pollinator plants attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects
- Birds and insects help manage pests naturally
- Fallen leaves, prunings, and fruit return organic matter to the soil
This layered approach increases resilience, reduces inputs, and improves long-term productivity.
What We Grow
Our orchards feature perennial, soil-building trees selected for flavor, nutrition, cultural significance, and ecological compatibility. Grown without harmful synthetic chemicals and harvested at peak ripeness, our fruit is sold fresh and locally, supporting both human health and environmental regeneration. Our signature crops include:
🍐 Asian Pears
Crisp, aromatic varieties such as Shinseiki and Hosui, valued for sweetness, texture, and storage quality.
🌰 Chinese Jujube (Red Dates)
Sweet, chewy fruits enjoyed fresh or dried. Jujube trees are drought-tolerant, resilient, and supportive of long-term orchard stability.
🍊 Oranges & Citrus
Mandarins, blood oranges, kaffir lime, and yuzu grown in biologically active soils that enhance essential oils and complex flavors.
🍇 Pakistani Mulberries
Rare, deep-purple mulberries with rich sweetness and high antioxidant content, supporting birds and pollinators alongside human harvests.
🥭 Mango Trees
Carefully grafted tropical varieties such as Alphonso and Manila, grown in protected microclimates as small-batch regenerative orchard crops.
🍏 Custared Apple
Sugar apple, Sweetsop, Cherimoya, Soursop (or Guanabana) are the common names. A climate-resilient apple variety producing sweet, crunchy clusters, ideal for regenerative and agroforestry systems.
Biodiversity-Driven Orchard Design
- Native and adaptive understory plants for erosion control and nutrient cycling
- Flowering species to support pollinators year-round
- Medicinal and culturally important plants within orchard zones
- Hedgerows and windbreaks that create habitat and microclimates
- Soil biodiversity, including fungi, bacteria, earthworms, and insects
Regenerative Orchard Practices
- Compost-enriched living soils and organic mulches
- Cover cropping and multi-species groundcover
- Micro-irrigation and water-efficient design
- Minimal soil disturbance to protect microbial networks
- On-farm nutrient cycling from livestock, poultry, and plant residues
